My name is April Kempler and I live in Reno, Nevada with my husband Paul. I came to the high sierra desert as young bride from Burbank, California in December, 1993. I’m a native Californian, but I’ve adopted this terrific little city as my own.  This blog is about what I have to say on living in Reno, Nevada, the happenings, and how they affect me.

Of course I’ll wager (no pun intended) that there is a lot about Reno most people don’t know. There’s a lot I don’t know, but I’m going to find out and hopefully you will be along with me for the ride.

Sometimes I will write about other things. For example, I wrote a book.

I have a publisher, locally owned and operated in  Reno, NV. The book, entitled THE ALTERED I was released November 13, 2013, with the Kindle version following in 2015.

You may be wondering what this book is about?

  • It is the memoir/biography of my father-in-law, Joseph Kempler, who is a Holocaust survivor.
  • He managed to live through six different concentration camps, some of which were the most dangerous camps of all. These were death camps where it was all about survival of the fittest.
  • Joseph was Jewish. Along the way he lost his faith in God and became an atheist. He abandoned his family to ensure his own survival and cut off all his emotions, especially love.
  • In one camp, Joseph, encountered a group of Aryan’s who were like no others. They were suffering alongside him in the camps, not for their race, but for their religion. This strange group of people struck a chord somewhere deep inside Joseph.
  • Many years later, after emigrating to America, Joseph encountered this Christian group. He learns about their faith and comes to a gradual understanding of how they survived the concentration camps. He later converted to Christianity.

Unique story isn’t it?

      Pre-Order The Altered I

  4. April,
I pre-ordered The Altered 1 (POD). I waited, not so patiently, for it to be published. Hey, I wanted to read it! It was worth paying up-front. You’ve done an amazing job writing this book. I couldn’t put it down. My husband is reading it now and our dinner conversation often centers around it. Great job. I hope you keep writing.

  5. Hi April. I just discovered your blog today, doing a search for various Reno news sites. My parents and grandparents live there (like you, I grew up in southern CA, though now I live in NY).

Long story short–my grandparents are Holocaust survivors living in Reno. You may have met or crossed paths with them at various Holocaust-related events. My grandmother, Lydia Lebovic, has spoken at schools and conferences in both Reno and Las Vegas.

I’d love to get in touch with you to discuss my grandparents and your father-in-law. Could you please email me? I look forward to hearing from you!
